About

Catherine Becker, PhD, is an author and associate professor at the University of Hawaii, Hilo, where she teaches courses in sustainability and leadership, relational, family, and organizational communication. Her research and creative work explore the ways that communication contributes to the transformation of individuals, systems, and cultures. It crosses methodological and disciplinary lines, forges connections that didn’t exist previously, to encourage new paradigms, perspectives, and possibilities.

Her book and card set, Mana Cards: The Power of Hawaiian Wisdom, has been published in several languages. Mana Cards interweaves images and symbols with stories from Hawaii with insightful teachings designed to foster new perspectives and empowering connections. You can learn more about it at www.manacards.com.

She is about to publish a new book, The Mother Road: A Black Market Baby, A Motorcycle, A Search for Real Across Un-United States, a memoir about authenticity. When she was nineteen, shortly after finding out she was a black market baby, she set out to search for her natural mother, mother nature, and to escape working-class life in Buffalo by riding a motorcycle across the United States. Resenting the lies and secrets that surrounded her real identity, along with the society that sanctions them, she explored alternatives to mainstream religion and culture in the United States. Moving between myth and reality in the American landscape and beyond, a series of signs and synchronicities led her to discover who she is and who she could become.
